Job Description

Key member of the utilization management team, and provides timely medical review of service requests that do not initially meet the applicable medical necessity guidelines. Routinely interacts with physicians, leadership and management staff, other Physician Clinical Reviewers (PCR), and health plan members and staff whenever a physician`s input is needed or required.

Responsibilities

Psychiatry/Behavioral Health Physician Clinical Reviewer – Job Description Responsibilities

1. Acts as Behavioral Health Medical Director

a. Clinical participation in Behavioral Health Case Management Program

i. Available as a resource to the Prime Therapeutics staff for questions/discussion and or P2P discussions with physician of case management cases

ii. Attendance at ad hoc internal Prime Therapeutics meetings for Health Plan’s case management cases

iii. Attendance at ad hoc “Focused Case Review” meetings with the client

b. Clinical participation in Behavioral Health Utilization Management (UM) Program

i. Available as a resource to the Prime Therapeutics staff for questions/concerns related to utilization management initial determination reviews by the nurses or appeal reviews completed by our medical review vendors

ii. Available to complete initial determination reviews or appeal reviews (including peer to peer discussions)

iii. Participation in the quarterly retrospective quality assurance review of behavioral health utilization management cases as determined by the VP, Medical Director, Prime Therapeutics

c. Participation in Prime Therapeutics Quality Committees

d. Behavioral Health Senior Medical Director, Medical Management support for Prime Therapeutics Medical Management programs including Navigate

2. Reviews cases in which clinical determinations cannot be made by the Initial Clinical Reviewer.

3. Discusses determinations with requesting physicians or ordering providers, when available, within the regulatory time frame of the request by phone or fax. 4. Provides clinical rationale for standard and expedited appeals.

5. Provides assistance and acts as a resource to Initial Clinical Reviewers as needed to discuss cases and problems.

6. Utilizes medical/clinical review guidelines and parameters to assure consistency in the physician review process so as to reflect appropriate utilization and compliance with Prime's policies/procedures, as well as URAC and NCQA guidelines.

7. Ensures documentation of all communications with medical office staff and/or physician/provider is recorded in a timely and accurate manner.

8. Participates in on-going inter-rater reliability training and testing

9. Assists the Medical Director and/or VP, Medical Director in research activities/questions related to the Utilization Management process, interpretation, guidelines and/or system support.

10. On a requested basis, reviews appeal cases and/or attends hearings for discussion of utilization management decisions.

11. On a requested basis, may function as Medical Director for select health plans or regions, assuming overall accountability for utilization management while working in conjunction with the VP, Medical Director.

12. Other duties as assigned by the VP, Medical Director, Prime Therapeutics and the Medical Director of Prime Therapeutics

    Potential pay for this position ranges from $90.87 - $154.33 based on experience and skills.
